Clinical therapist

Sophia Rafiqi is a clinical therapist who centers community involvement and social wellness in her mental health treatment. As a third-culture kid, she found her way to the therapy field after her own experience in therapy, where she noticed a gap in culturally affirming treatment for children of immigrants in the US. Special interests include working with complex trauma, identity exploration, couples & family work, grief-processing, healing from parentification, and working with artists.

Sophia practices with a psychodynamic umbrella, believing that unconscious patterns need to be brought to light with curiosity and care to promote change and fulfillment. She pairs this with the distress-tolerance, skills-based perspective of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. This combination promotes both insight & self-compassion, along with tangible skills to practice outside the therapy room.

She uses her background in dance and movement to incorporate somatic interventions for trauma-processing and practicing safe self-attunement. Sophia also uses Internal Family Systems to help positively reframe challenging feelings and impulses, believing that change first requires understanding and tenderness. Sophia also uses her background in improv and sketch comedy to incorporate roleplaying and creativity into the therapeutic relationship.

Most importantly, Sophia believes therapy is relational, and takes great care to form careful, intentional, and genuine bonds with her clients at their pace. By providing clients with a safe, professional relationship in which to have corrective emotional experiences, clients can build new relational data that transforms their real-life relationships.

Sophia is available to provide services in Illinois, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
